Researching Federal Buyers

How federal departments connect to contract opportunities

A department is the broadest level of the federal buying structure. It shows where a mission and its contract spending sit, but the department name alone rarely identifies the buyer. Useful capture research continues through the contracting agencies beneath it and then to the offices that issue solicitations and administer awards.

01

Compare the size and shape of demand

Obligations show the value of recorded contract activity, while actions show purchasing frequency. Read both together: a department with fewer large awards represents a different market from one making thousands of smaller purchases.

02

Check market fit before following the money

Top NAICS industries and PSC categories reveal what each department buys. Vendor counts add competitive context and help distinguish a broad supplier market from one concentrated among established contractors.

03

Move from departments to actual buyers

Open a department to identify its contracting agencies, then continue to the contracting-office level. That path brings the research closer to procurement programs, recurring buyers, solicitations, and award activity relevant to your company.
